Summary

US Army Captain Collins is preparing to write farewell letters by devising an epistolary cliché with the same content characteristics, to be used to simulate the suicide of prisoners. This routine leads to exasperation and comes to the final break, when the captain - a victim of this tried and tested system - is forced to execute a very young recruit from Hitlerjugend. The memory of a bloody battle surfaced in his head makes him desist in the execution.
